This past weekend marked the end of an era for Williamsburg’s Monster Island. The building, which housed a number of non-profit performance, studio and art spaces, is slated to be demolished before the end of the year. On Saturday, Monster Island celebrated it’s seventh and final annual block party at the Kent and Metropolitan location (Hyperallergic reports that Secret Project Robot, one of the arts organizations currently housed in the building, plans to move to Bushwick). On Sunday, members of the building’s collective gathered for a ceremonial ‘Paint Pour’, anointing the exterior of the already colorful building known for its murals with a final wash of color. It was a beautiful specter to behold as lines of paint dripped down the facade, splashing the sidewalks below and forming technicolor puddles that oozed towards the gutter. The paint was mopped up with rollers and redistributed along the side of the building – murals from the likes of Other, Deuce Seven, and Roa to name but a few vanished behind blueish-green swatches of paint. While I am sad to see the work – and more importantly yet another community arts space – disappear from the North Brooklyn waterfront, the ‘Paint Pour’ was a spirited and joyous farewell.
After an amazingly crap day of walking around for work in 103 degree weather, I was happy to arrive home to a pleasant and unexpected surprise: the Perth based artist Daek One was just finishing up a mural on the tailor shop at the end of my block. I’ve been trying to get a few friends to ask to paint this spot for quite a while now, so it’s great to see someone finally taking advantage of it! To see more work from this Australian artist, check out his Flickr stream here and his work with his collective, Last Chance Studio here.
Earlier this evening Shepard Fairey drew a crowd of fans and locals when he climbed the ladder to paste up his classic Andre The Giant image on the outside of Indian Larry Motorcycles in Williamsburg. Afterwards he stuck around to hand out stickers and pose for pictures, proving the saying “nice guys finish last” wrong!
