Sweet Toof Rolls Into Pandemic

Taking his inspiration from the storied US freight train, London’s Sweet Toof’s Derailed rolls into Pandemic Gallery this Friday night for his second New York solo show. Spanning the spectrum from traditional oil paintings on canvas to sculptural installations with salvaged train sets, the artist has transformed the gallery into a maniacally toothy and phantasmagorical homage to boxcar culture. Come out, you won’t be disappointed.

Summer is in the Air and on the Roof

This Williamsburg rooftop has taken on a decidedly international flair – Spain’s Nuria rolled out a large, pink geometric form on the roof between the even pinker chompers Britain’s Sweet Toof recently left behind. While other rats thrive all over the city, only the head of Roa’s rat remains. Aones, CS, Goal, Hellbent, Smells and El Celso hold it down for New York.

Last month, British artist Sweet Toof’s first solo show in NYC opened at Bushwick’s Factory Fresh. But after a month long trip stateside, the gallery is not the only place in Brooklyn where he has left his mark…

Sweet Toof’s ‘Dark Horse’ opens at Factory Fresh 4/29

Last spring London’s Sweet Toof came through New York just long enough to paint a few roof tops & murals and to charm just about everyone and anyone who he met. This spring he’s back again, with the promise of more painting, more charming, and his first New York solo exhibition at the Bushwick gallery Factory Fresh.

Dark Horse, which opens this Friday, will showcase Sweet Toof’s more classical painting chops in works heavily influenced by the Vanitas paintings of sixteenth century Europe, Mexican Day of the Dead iconography, Subway Art, and the underground comics of Vaughn Bodé. All made complete, of course, with plenty of his signature ‘gummy chompers’!

On a Personal Note…

As the proud mama of a pit bull rescued from Animal Care & Control of NYC, this breed will always be close to my heart. Sadly, for various reasons, they are also the animals the are filling the shelters of cities all around this country. Luckily there are people in this world like Tia Torres, founder of the Villalobos Rescue Center, the largest pit bull rescue and rehabilitation shelter in this country. Sadly, Villalobos is in danger of being closed down by a single, hateful woman with a prejudice against against this loyal, beautiful and loving breed as well as their handlers.

If you, like me, have a soft spot for animals, I encourage you to take 30 seconds to sign this URGENT petition to stop the closing of Villalobos Rescue Center. As of my writing this, the petition already has almost 9,000 signatures, but their goal is for 15,000. Please support these dogs and enjoy the pictures of my girl, Ava:

Becki Fuller’s 2010 Top 40

2010 has been yet another crazy year, filled with lots of change, adventure, and as always, fun. The highlight for me was the adoption of my dog Ava, who I consider to be New York’s #1 pit bull street art model. I was also very fortunate in getting to meet and spend time with some really fantastic people, such as ECB, Jef Aerosol, Sweet Toof, Ludo, and Roa, during their stays in the city. My trips to Oaxaca, Art Basel Miami, and getting to see Steve Powers bring his Love Letter project to my hometown of Syracuse were a great way to rounded out the year. After taking a look back on this year, I would like to share some of my favorite photos, people, art & events from 2010 (see Luna Park’s list here).

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!
