Impressions from Berlin

Berlin (photo by Luna Park)

Just / Lost Soul (photo by Luna Park)

My most recent trip to Berlin is already over a month in the past. A week is far too little time to capture it all, but this collection of favorites should give a pretty good indication of the level of graffiti saturation present in Berlin. Big, highly visible blockbuster rollers have been supplemented by an array of equally as impressive extinguisher pieces. A new addition to the visual landscape are colorful, vertical tags reminiscent of pixação, sprayed by rappeling down the sides of buildings. I finally had the opportunity to ride the Ringbahn once around the periphery of Berlin, an experience I recommend to anyone interested in the intersection of graffiti, architecture, and rail infrastructure. I’m itchin’ to go back.

In New York for Rochester’s Wall/Therapy festival and the Wooster Collective’s 10th anniversary show at Jonathan Levine Gallery, the globetrotting Belgian artist Roa spent a couple of days relaxing in Brooklyn. Wednesday night he completed this coyote piece on the exterior of the newly relocated Pandemic Gallery.

The Walls of Vitry-sur-Seine

C215 (photo by Luna Park)

C215 (photo by Luna Park)

The city of Vitry-sur-Seine lies within the southeastern suburbs of Paris. Historically, this commune has been home to a large, diverse immigrant population, a background that contributed to Vitry being on the forefront in the development of the French hip hop movement in the 80s. For some time now, the city has supported a cultural policy of bringing art to all, for example, opening it’s Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne in 2005. The city has actively embraced public arts programs, installing contemporary sculptures throughout public spaces as well as supporting large-scale mural projects. Thanks to initiatives by artists such as C215, Vitry’s walls bear the work of an international roster of street artists such as Nunca, Nychos, Roa and Ethos to name but a few. I spent an afternoon in Vitry earlier this summer and only caught a fraction of the many murals on display.

The Walls Are Alive in Albany, Part Dos

Nanook & Gaia (photo by Becki Fuller)

As Luna mentioned in her post earlier today, we had a great time at Albany’s Living Walls festival this past weekend. Not only was it an opportunity to catch up with friends and to make the acquaintance of artists and other photographers from near and far, but we were also fortunate enough to meet and interact with many members of the communities that will be living with these walls for some time to come. Some were so enthusiastic that they hopped right into my pictures to model for me! And since no two shots are ever quite the same, here are my highlights from the weekend (See Luna’s here):

The Walls Are Alive in Albany

How & Nosm (photo by Luna Park)

The Street Spot took to the road this past weekend to check out Albany’s inaugural Living Walls festival in person. Samson Contompasis of the Marketplace Gallery worked tirelessly for the better part of a year to bring world-class street artists to his hometown and to convince the New York State capital that his vision for urban renewal was one worth pursuing. Just as we pulled up to the How & Nosm wall above, a woman with a small band of children emerged from the community center across the road. Upon seeing us staring up at the mural, she started beaming widely, gushing about how much she loved it, and telling us what a miracle it was. This was but one of many positive encounters we had with the people of Albany – if their reactions are any indication, then I’d say Living Walls was a huge success. Below are some of my favorite images from the weekend – stay tuned for Becki’s impressions.

Roa in Berlin

Roa in Berlin-Kreuzberg (all photos by Luna Park)

Having painted large-scale walls in the UK, in several cities across the US, Mexico, Germany, and Denmark to name but a few of places he’s been just this year, Roa’s had an incredibly prolific year.  His latest show, Decomposition, just opened at Vienna’s Inoperable Gallery last week and word has it a trip to Australia is in the works. As luck would have it, my recent work trip to Berlin allowed me the opportunity to catch the closing day of Roa’s Transit show at Skalitzers.  He also painted a monstrous outdoor wall in the Kjosk lot down the street from the gallery (you can see photos of him in action on Just’s blog).

Below are just a few impressions from the show featuring some his signature interactive pieces. There are more images from Transit over on Skalitzers’ site.

Welling Court Mural Project 2011

kids

In addition to John Ahearn’s life casting (which I covered in yesterday’s post), Welling Court was frenzy of painting activity on Saturday afternoon, with the number of artists participating in the Welling Court Mural Project over doubeling from last year! Here is a little slice of some of the walls and people that could be seen:

Becki Fuller’s 2010 Top 40

2010 has been yet another crazy year, filled with lots of change, adventure, and as always, fun. The highlight for me was the adoption of my dog Ava, who I consider to be New York’s #1 pit bull street art model. I was also very fortunate in getting to meet and spend time with some really fantastic people, such as ECB, Jef Aerosol, Sweet Toof, Ludo, and Roa, during their stays in the city. My trips to Oaxaca, Art Basel Miami, and getting to see Steve Powers bring his Love Letter project to my hometown of Syracuse were a great way to rounded out the year. After taking a look back on this year, I would like to share some of my favorite photos, people, art & events from 2010 (see Luna Park’s list here).

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Photos include work of: El Mac, Retna, How, Nosm, Aryz, Veng, Themo, Deem, ECB, “Sugar Junkie”, Specter, Sweet Toof, The Dude Company, Ludo, Skewville, C215, Dolk, MOMO, Faile, Swoon, Chris Stain, Joe Iurato, Lapiztola, Dan Witz, Gaia, Elbow Toe, Sofia Maldonado, Shepard Fairey, Steve Powers, Over Under, N D’A, Broken Crow, Cern, Cekis, Jef Aerosol, Cash4, Smells, Rambo, Trusto Corp, White Cocoa, Rime, Swampy, Celso, Nekst, Paul Richard, Goya, Faro, Darkcloud, Sadue, Gen2, UFO, Roa, Cahil Muraghu, Tati, and Kid Acne

Roa on the East Coast

roa ff1

With a successful show with LA’s Thinkspace Gallery at New Puppy Gallery in November under this belt, Roa flew to Miami to participate in Primary Flight. His lengthy wall on a yellow background was the first thing I saw upon arriving in the Design District (photos below). This week he’s been busy again in Brooklyn, adorning the gates at Factory Fresh with a pair of squirrels.

I’m in Miami Bitch! Photos From Art Basel, 2010

Going over my pictures from Miami and trying to decide what to post has been almost as challenging (and impossible) as it was to shoot everything that was going on during Art Basel in the first place! But for all that I missed (Burning Candy! London Police! Kid Acne!), I really had a fantastic time and felt like I never stopped moving, running into friends from all over the world and their artwork every step of the way. So, in no particular order, here are some of my favorites from Art Basel, Miami, 2010:
