A stone’s throw away from the official halls of Art Basel lies an entirely different showcase for contemporary art: a rail loading dock along the Basel Rhine Harbor features a style hall of fame anchored by abstract works by Basel graffiti legend Smash137. I cannot put into words the excitement I felt at stumbling across this place and having the privilege to witness this wall in person.
Last spring London’s Sweet Toof came through New York just long enough to paint a few roof tops & murals and to charm just about everyone and anyone who he met. This spring he’s back again, with the promise of more painting, more charming, and his first New York solo exhibition at the Bushwick gallery Factory Fresh.
Dark Horse, which opens this Friday, will showcase Sweet Toof’s more classical painting chops in works heavily influenced by the Vanitas paintings of sixteenth century Europe, Mexican Day of the Dead iconography, Subway Art, and the underground comics of Vaughn Bodé. All made complete, of course, with plenty of his signature ‘gummy chompers’!
