This past weekend’s third iteration of the Welling Court block party, organized by the tireless Alison and Garrison Buxton, was a huge success. The total number of walls now painted in this corner of Astoria has almost reached 100! Here’s a small taste of what went down on Saturday…

Cost Showpaper Box

The “Community Serviced” Showpaper newspaper boxes Becki wrote about earlier this week have been installed out on the streets. We’ll see how long they last… but you have to admit it’s nice to see Cost like this.

"The Community Serviced" Opening

Last night was a fun night filled with art, music, tattoos, video games, and even some Cirque du Soleil-esque contortionism. No, it wasn’t just another night at a hipster bar in Williamsburg, this was “The Community Serviced”, a show curated by Andrew H. Shirley which featured 12 uniquely produced Showpaper newspaper boxes designed by 24 artists. After the opening night, the works will be placed around the city to serve the community both as public art pieces as well as an expansion of Showpaper’s distribution network of their bi-monthly publication.

Here’s to hoping that they last long enough!
