Impressions from 2012 Welling Court

Olek for Welling Court 2012 (photo by Luna Park)

This past weekend’s third iteration of the Welling Court block party, organized by the tireless Alison and Garrison Buxton, was a huge success. The total number of walls now painted in this corner of Astoria has almost reached 100! Here’s a small taste of what went down on Saturday…

From Buenos Aires to Brooklyn: Jaz

Jaz x Cern (photo by Luna Park)

Argentinian artist Jaz has been putting work on the streets of Buenos Aires since the mid 1990s. Graffitimundo describes his recent work as featuring “Mexican “lucha libre” style wrestling figures with animal masks and part-man, part-beast figures locked in combat throughout the city.” His ‘manimals’ have sprung up in several locations in Brooklyn, including a feline-friendly collaborative wall with Cern as well as a piece with South African artist Freddy Sam.

Welling Court Mural Project 2011

kids

In addition to John Ahearn’s life casting (which I covered in yesterday’s post), Welling Court was frenzy of painting activity on Saturday afternoon, with the number of artists participating in the Welling Court Mural Project over doubeling from last year! Here is a little slice of some of the walls and people that could be seen:

Becki Fuller’s 2010 Top 40

2010 has been yet another crazy year, filled with lots of change, adventure, and as always, fun. The highlight for me was the adoption of my dog Ava, who I consider to be New York’s #1 pit bull street art model. I was also very fortunate in getting to meet and spend time with some really fantastic people, such as ECB, Jef Aerosol, Sweet Toof, Ludo, and Roa, during their stays in the city. My trips to Oaxaca, Art Basel Miami, and getting to see Steve Powers bring his Love Letter project to my hometown of Syracuse were a great way to rounded out the year. After taking a look back on this year, I would like to share some of my favorite photos, people, art & events from 2010 (see Luna Park’s list here).

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Electric Windows 2010, This Saturday in Beacon, NY

EW Full

Back in 2008, Open Space Gallery hosted the first installation of Electric Windows, a day of live painting, music, local food and fun, in Beacon, NY. The lineup of artists included favorites from both the street art and graffiti world such as Cycle, Pink, Ron English, Elbow Toe, Michael DeFeo, and Chris Stain. This year’s group of artists is an impressive mix of returning & new faces, many of whom I look forward to seeing in action for the first time!

Brooklyn Walls

gp cernSome really great, new, production walls have gone up in Brooklyn lately, these fine examples having been painted over the long Fourth of July holiday weekend. Cern YMI (above) is joined on the wall by Host18 DYM, SPOne and Vor 718. gp host18gp spone gp vor718

Art in General and Then Some

Last Saturday, the non-profit arts organization Art in General was host to Underground Up, a fall benefit party in an old firehouse on Lafayette Street. Artists Cake, Chris Stain and Cern were invited to create site-specific murals, the catch being they only had a few hours Saturday afternoon before the party to put up their work. It’s a good thing they know a thing or two about painting under pressure…

Cake was kind enough to invite me into the space on Monday, shortly before the pieces were painted over. [Heads up: I'll have a full interview and studio visit with Cake coming soon!]

Happy Caturday

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m just one cat shy of being a crazy cat lady (for the record, I have two). While I encourage everyone to do their part to help bring down NYC’s feral cat population, these street cats do just fine on their own:
