Bäst 2012

Bäst (Photo by Luna Park)

Although he’s never really gone for long, it’s been great to see Bäst hit New York City streets with renewed vigor recently. I’ve really been enjoying his latest work, especially these stencils.

His recent stencil work has also included a couple legal murals in Brooklyn, including one in Bushwick together with Aiko.

But what’s got me most excited, is this new crop of classic Bäst collages, wheatpasted to doors and walls in lower Manhattan…

Specter Sidebusts Swoon and others

Specter has put up a new series titled “Unwanted Collaborations/Sidebusts”, in which he’s added to pieces on the street by Swoon, Bast, Skewville and Faile. In the case of the Swoon (above), Specter’s addition has not only breathed new life into a piece that had been badly dissed (see his website for the before & after), but also cleverly paid homage to the original piece. The other alterations are so subtle as to be almost indistinguishable from the originals.

Bast

Just this past week, several new Bast collages have been popping up around the various neighborhoods of Brooklyn. He appears to have vice and excess on the mind these days, with prominent images of women, candy, bling, big business, and even that spinach swilling hog Popeye.

Pushing Faile & Bast’s Buttons

You’ve got only 10 more days to get yourself to Faile and Bast’s Deluxx Fluxx arcade installation at 158 Allen Street (btw Stanton and Rivington), open Tuesdays through Sundays from 3-11pm through May 27th. Filled with fully functional games that flash, buzz and beep, the arcade is sensory overload in the best possible way. Longtime fans of Faile and Bast will surely appreciate the classic imagery incorporated into the setup. Don’t sleep on this – I haven’t had this much fun in a gallery in a long time.

Can’t Beat It

Since Michael Jackson’s passing in June, there has been tribute graffiti and street art popping up all around the world: from stencils on the streets of Brazil to murals in Paris. New York is, of course, no exception. Among my favorites is this new wheat paste from one of street art’s masters of celebrity collage, Bäst. Paired with Chris Stain’s woman and child stencil, this is a trio is a real Thriller (insert groans here)!
