This past weekend’s third iteration of the Welling Court block party, organized by the tireless Alison and Garrison Buxton, was a huge success. The total number of walls now painted in this corner of Astoria has almost reached 100! Here’s a small taste of what went down on Saturday…

Welling Court Mural Project 2011

kids

In addition to John Ahearn’s life casting (which I covered in yesterday’s post), Welling Court was frenzy of painting activity on Saturday afternoon, with the number of artists participating in the Welling Court Mural Project over doubeling from last year! Here is a little slice of some of the walls and people that could be seen:

Sculptor John Ahearn’s Life Casting at Welling Court

On Saturday, June 25th, members of New York City’s rich and varied street art & graffiti community came together with the equally diverse community of Welling Court in Queens for the 2nd Annual Welling Court Mural Project and block party. Curated by Ad Hoc Art’s dynamic duo of Alison & Garrison Buxton, this year’s crew of legendary and groundbreaking artists represented over 50 years of activity. However, for me, the highest of the highlights came courtesy of the acclaimed sculptor and public artist, John Ahearn. Though he may be best know by many for his “repetitive life casting” of real people in his South Bronx neighborhood, Ahearn has been bringing his artistic works to communities around the world – as well as galleries and museums – since the early 1980′s. And this weekend those of us at Welling Court were treated to a live casting of one fortunate (and apparently not-at-all claustrophobic) young girl named Karlee. Surrounded by an enthusiastic crowd of party goers, Ahearn and his assistant engaged us us all in his casting process, from start to finish.

Public works of Ahearn and his frequent collaborator, Rigoberto Torres, can still be seen around the South Bronx and in Socrates Sculpture Park.

Willoughby Windows v2.0

Garrison & Alison Buxton of Ad Hoc Art are back in downtown Brooklyn for the second year in a row, bringing us their latest installation of Willoughby Windows. The concept remains the same: to bring art directly to the community by creating a storefront gallery along an entire block of Willoughby Street, though the artists have changed. This year’s lineup includes C.Damage, Chris Mendoza & Pablo Power, Daryll Peirce, Faust, Hellbent, Jef Aerosol, Joe Iurato, Laura Lee, LogikOne, Ron English, Skewville, and Thundercut.
