Recently I had the pleasure of finally seeing in person a number of murals in Washington, DC, organized by Art Whino. This expertly curated series of large-scale murals features the work of Reka, Nawer, SatOne, Momo, Rubin and Kyle Hughes Odgers. I particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition of L’Enfant Plaza’s Brutalist architecture with these large, colorful, and abstract murals.
A stone’s throw away from the official halls of Art Basel lies an entirely different showcase for contemporary art: a rail loading dock along the Basel Rhine Harbor features a style hall of fame anchored by abstract works by Basel graffiti legend Smash137. I cannot put into words the excitement I felt at stumbling across this place and having the privilege to witness this wall in person.
I’m very excited for this weekend’s Spectrum show at Red Hook’s Gallery Brooklyn, curated by the one and only Choice Royce. With Rubin, Hellbent, EKG, See One and Col, Royce has put together a line-up of artists who aren’t afraid to experiment – willfully, boldly and colorfully – at the cross section of abstract art and graffiti. Do not sit this one out!
