Please Help Nelson Find His ‘Forever Home’

Back in March, I put up a post hoping to find a home for my foster dog, Nelson. He is such a fun, sweet, handsome and loving dog that I really felt that an adoption would come quickly for him.  Sadly, it has now been almost 6 months since I took him in, and I am still looking for his ‘forever home’.  In fact, in this whole time, his rescue agency has only sent one single person out to even meet him and they won’t assist me in getting him to adoption events.  Without a car, it is kind of difficult to get a 60 pound dog from Crown Heights to Manhattan. On my own I have tried everything that I can think of, but it has been unbelievably difficult to find anyone who is willing and able to give this sweet boy a chance.  And unfortunately we have gotten to the point where I am unable to continue fostering him, due to some issues with my own dog.

Nelson is a handsome 1 year old male Blue/Grey Weimaraner/Staffordshire Terrier mix who is in URGENT need of a loving ‘forever home’ by August 7th. Unfortunately my own dog has started randomly attacking him, making the situation unsafe for all involved. My dog is currently living with my parents, but I have to bring her home in a few weeks. Nelson is a sweet, energetic, confident and very open boy who sleeps belly up and loves to run, play, give kisses and cuddle. He is still young, so his training is a work in progress. But he has come a long way since being pulled from a Harlem shelter’s kill list and coming to live with me six months ago. He has learned several commands, pulls much less than he used to on the leash, and is newly house trained. He is a strong and energetic boy who would really benefit from a firm, but kind and patient owner (he LOVES men, but not cats). I know that with time, love and continued training he will grow into the loving, well-behaved, adult dog he is destined to be. *There is a small fee to his rescue to cover their cost of adopting him from the shelter and neutering him, but all of his shots are up to date.* Please contact me at rfullerrd[at]gmail.com if you have any leads. Any help in getting the word out is also greatly appreciated.

Elbow-Toe’s Street Cat Looks Back in Anger

It’s been a while since he last graced the streets of Brooklyn with new work, but Elbow-Toe has returned to form with a fabulous, large-scale, feline piece titled Look Back in Anger. Click here to see the original, cut-paper collage upon which this piece is based. Fans of his work will recall that he put up an equally impressive, large-scale dog almost two years ago to the day.

With the completion of her intricate, stenciled mural titled Here’s Fun For Everyone, Japanese-born, Brooklyn-based artist Lady Aiko has the distinction of being the first female artist to paint the famed Bowery/Houston wall.

Get Your Wall/Therapy in Rochester, NY

Freddy Sam (photo by Becki Fuller)

In July 2011, Brooklyn native Ian Wilson brought Cape Town-based graffiti artists Faith47, Dal, Freddy Sam and Mak1one to Rochester, NY for the inaugural  year of his mural project “Visual Intervention”.  The artists painted several walls alongside members of the local graffiti crew, FUA and Shawn Dunwoody of the Four Walls Gallery.  Wilson’s hope was for the walls to inspire and rehabilitate communities, bringing a positive & visually stimulating message of “belief” to a city that spends a good part of the year awash in the grays of winter (as I know all too well from growing up in Syracuse!).  Clearly the murals were well received by the city, as later this month “Visual Intervention” will enter into its second movement, known as Wall/Therapy.  The project appears to have grown, with more artists participating, coming from as far as Africa, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Belgium and New York City.  The impressive lineup of artists, or “therapists” includes: DALEast, Ben Eine, Liqen, ROA, Cern, Case, St.Monci, Mr.Prvrt, Theivin’ Stephen, How and Nosm, and Siloette.  See below for pictures of the walls from 2011 and for a list of all Wall/Therapy 2012 related events, including a fundraiser TONIGHT at the delicious Roc Brewing Co.

Phlegm in New York

Phlegm dances with Know Hope (photo by Luna Park)

After first seeing his work in person in Bristol a couple years ago, I’m very pleased that Sheffield-based artist Phlegm has finally come through New York. He made a playful addition to a figure Know Hope painted in March on an East Village wall organized by the MaNY Project (above). And he did up a huge wall next to a playground in Chelsea that’s sure to please kids as well as adults (below).

Moody Knows: America Runs on Graff

Moody

I stopped by Brooklyn’s Pandemic Gallery yesterday for a sneak peak at Moody’s American Runs on Graff show, which opens tomorrow. Fans of his incredibly clean design and signature characters are in for a real treat, as he’s pulled out all the stops and run with the Dunkin Donuts theme.

This past weekend’s third iteration of the Welling Court block party, organized by the tireless Alison and Garrison Buxton, was a huge success. The total number of walls now painted in this corner of Astoria has almost reached 100! Here’s a small taste of what went down on Saturday…

Teddy Troops Takeover Tanaka

Flying Fortress w/ Chris RWK, Veng, Most & Nychos (photo by Luna Park)

Germany’s Flying Fortress has been a regular visitor to New York City over the last few years, thanks in part to his close connections to Robots Will Kill. While he’s contributed works to a number of group shows, this Friday’s The One-Man Army show at Mighty Tanaka marks his first New York solo show. He’s been in the U.S. for a few weeks now and has painted two massive new murals in Bushwick, both in collaboration with Nychos and others. The most recent mural (above) is a preview of the Vaughan Bode inspired work – aka his “Bodentruppen”, a pun on the German word for ground troops – he will show at Tanaka. Just to get you in the mood, I’ve put together some of my favorite Teddy Troop pieces from past visits to New York below.

Street Art Pop-Up Store at Bushwick Open Studios

For several years now, writer Robin Grearson has been a major champion of New York City based street artists. She has curated several shows featuring street artists at The Active Space and her writings featuring local talent have appeared in a variety of publications and blogs, such as Artlog, Bushwick Dream, Curbs & Stoops, and Brooklyn Rail. And starting today, for Bushwick Open Studios 2012, Robin will take the unique step of turning her writing studio into a Street Art Pop-Up Store. The “store” will feature at least twenty artists, including Chris Stain, Daniel Feral, Jon Burgerman, LNY, N’DA, Royce Bannon and Never. There will be everything from original drawings and paintings to prints, zines and posters available, and surprisingly (with names like these!) nothing will cost over $300. Events like this are always a great opportunity for collectors to pick up a piece of work by their favorite artist on the cheap, so don’t miss out on this one as you stumble your way through a PBR-induced-open-studio-party haze this weekend!

Dates/times:
Open to the public during Bushwick Open Studios, June 1 – 3, 2012
Friday, June 1: 2 – 7 PM
Saturday, June 2: 12 – 6 PM
Sunday, June 3: 12 – 7 PM

Location:
