Over the years that I have been photographing street art, the question comes up time and time again: who are your favorite artists? Whether it’s me doing the asking or someone asking me, there are a select few people who seem to make it onto just about everyone’s list. One such artist is Reader, aka Read More, Read More Books, Booker, OYE, Rancour, Hoodrich, Boans…the list goes on and on. You know when he has come through your town because it’s hard to walk even a block without seeing some sign that he has been there. Yet, in the past (and it’s possible that I’m wrong here) I have never seen anything of his – not a print, a canvas, or even a zine – available for purchase. But today I was stumbeling around the internet and happened to run into the website for Operation: Madman.
Apparently these madmen have very good taste, as Operation: Madman Publishing and Distribution has brought us The Reader for their debut publication. Originally released as a hand-bound edition of 12 in 2005, this new publication is being made more widely available as a hand numbered edition of 2000. Samples of what to expect from within its 186 page can be previewed in this Flickr set.
If you live in NYC and you want to support a local business, I hear that Scrap Yard has (or had) some copies for sale. It can also be purchased online at Railroad Semantics ($22) or at Operation: Madman ($18).
